The flamboyant, heroic and loyal characteristics of Ranjit Katyal, seamlessly intermix with Akshay Kumar, the actor, because that’s what he really is – a true blue patriot. There couldn’t be a perfect protagonist to steer this story other than Akshay Kumar himself. Nimrat Kaur and Akshay Kumar’s chemistry is not a perfectly cooked steak from the word go and it later becomes clear as to why such disconnect between the lead characters is necessary to bring out the human aspect of their love and how adversity brings each family closer.īut the real star of the movie is Akshay Kumar. In a genre dominated by seasoned directors like Shoojit Sircar, Neeraj Pandey and Sriram Raghavan, Raja Menon manages to carve out a niche for himself by narrating the story from Ranjit Katyal’s point of view and inducing subtle themes of patriotism and dark humor which deliver enough punches to keep the story board ticking. As Ranjit explores various options to get his family to a safer place, he faces precarious situations which put him in charge of an operation of unfathomable proportions. Spirited, energetic and mildly amusing, Ranjit Katyal’s journey of self-discovery brings out the themes of violence, death and survival in nowhere-land quite beautifully. The premise of the story is good enough to hook the audience, as Akshay Kumar’s character Ranjit Katyal is introduced as an influential Kuwaiti businessman, living a good life in his adopted country. Based on true events, ‘Airlift’ chronicles the massive rescue operation of 1,70,000 Indians from Kuwait in 1990.
